THE USE OF CARVACROLIC ORIGANUM OILS IN ANIMAL FEED ADDITIVES

Hans Jensema, Ropapharm International, Zaandam, The Netherlands

Ropapharm International has world-wide patents for the use of carvacrol rich Oregao

essential oils as a feed additive for pigs, poultry, birds and horses. Added in a specific

formulation (and concentration) into their feed it is said to increase the intestinal health

of the animal. Ropapharm has done extensive research on this and is currently working

on new applications for pets and fish.

For development of these products a long term reliable supply and source of suitable

Oregano essential oil is of great importance. PPO started evaluating the production

and quality of different Oregano origins/offsprings and, next to commercial field

production, developed a selection program to improve the plant material.

In the lecture/poster information will be given on both the production of plant material

and the essential oil and the application thereof in animal food and pharmaceuticals.
